Scrabble Can Be Fun!

Scrabble is a word game in which two to four players score points by placing tiles bearing a single letter onto a board divided into a 15×15 grid of squares. The tiles must form words that, in crossword fashion, read left to right in rows or downward in columns, and be included in a standard dictionary or lexicon.

Even when I couldn’t really spell, Scrabble was fun. I used to play with the tiles for hours making shapes or clicking them together to make sounds. Our tiles were stored in a little drawstring bag and that was also used as a purse (I was VERY rich when I had that purse!) and the tiles were used as money in our imaginary games. I believe that this helped me to not only recognise the letters, but encouraged me to create words so that when I was able to start playing the game, I had a head start.

We are never totally aware of what we are showing our children and having that game of Scrabble in the passage cupboard, was a genius move on my parent’s part; without them even knowing it! I would take it out and play with those tiles time and again.

Board games don’t have to be a one-type-only game. I know we get frustrated when we haul it out and there are bits missing, but think of how much fun your children have when they are playing with the game but doing something that does not follow the game’s rules. This is when the imagination kicks in and children get creative.

If you want to keep a whole set so that the game can be played following the rules, then buy a second, cheaper set for the children to play with. You will be amazed at the games they will come up with!
